World Porridge Day

World Porridge Day, every 10th of October was started in support of a charity in Scotland who supplies meals to children in developing countries. But it is something to celebrate in South Africa too, as porridge or Mielie-pap forms a firm part of our heritage and diet.

Way back, the Portuguese brought corn from the Americas into Africa, and it has become staple diet in South Africa, because it can be stored without refrigeration, it is affordable and can be found everywhere is stores and markets. Traditionally it is made into pap, served with vleis, or as a hearty good start breakfast, sour-milk porridge or even Umqombothi – a locally brewed ale.

Today is a great day to think of food security in the World and in our own country, and to cherish the simple foods that nourish our bodies and give us energy for the day.
