Fried Chicken Hot Cross Bun Sandwich

Chef Aya has done it again! The Cookdude gets innovative with our hot cross buns. Have you ever tried the trendy Fried Chicken on Waffles?! If not, you must, and if so…you know you love it! Chef Aya has used a simple buttermilk fried chicken (no breadcrumbs needed) and sandwiched it in a hot cross bun with some Boerenkaas cheese of course. The questions is, which flavour hot cross bun will your use?

Cooking Methods

  • Frying




  • 4 Hot cross buns (extra spicy, cranberry, fruit free or traditional)
  • 4 Chicken FIllets
  • 2 Cups (500ml) Buttermilk
  • Salt & Pepper
  • 2 Cups Flour (or more)
  • 1L Sunflower Oil
  • Butter (for the buns)
  • Boerenkaas cheese (grated) (As much as you like)


  1. Butterfly the chicken fillets and cut into quarters
  2. Season chicken with salt and pepper, place it in a bowl and add your buttermilk. Allow this to soak for 2hrs or overnight.
  3. Season your flour with salt and pepper.
  4. Take chicken out of the fridge, dust it in some flour and deep fry until it turns golden brown (5-10mins)
  5. Cut hot cross bun in half, toast in the oven for 3 minutes. Smear on some butter, top with the fried chicken & grated cheese. Enjoy.
