FLM Supplier, Urban Grown win 947 Young Entrepreneurs Competition

Food Lover’s Market is proud is bring a number of smallholder farms into our supply chain. This is vital to improving the livelihood of smallholder farmers, securing the future supply of crops and decreasing the food miles from farm to table; while offering increased traceability of our foodstuffs to our consumers. We are proud to announce that one of our smallholder suppliers, Urban Grown recently won the 947 Young Entrepreneurs Competition run by Lead SA and 947fm.

Urban Grown is a team of young urban farmers, who grow micro herbs, chilli, lettuce, tomato and kale hydroponically right in the city of Johannesburg. That means growing right where the products will be consumed, decreasing the transport burden and carbon footprint of the fresh produce. Urban Grown also use their influence to assist other smallholder farmers by sourcing their products.

To quote from Urban Grown’s website:
To plant a seed, watch it grow, to tend it and then harvest it, offered a simple but enduring satisfaction. The sense of being the custodian of that small patch of earth offered a taste of freedom- Nelson Mandela
