Let’s talk about Summer Fruits!
For many, the term “seasonal eating” sounds rather avant-garde and few of us actually know what it means. Simply put, it is eating produce that grows in the season that we are in, for example, we are in summer now, so we would eat summer fruits. And it is not so fancy at all, in fact, fruits in season are cheaper than those not in season.
This idea is easy to understand and with a Food Lover’s Market around your corner it is easy to implement.
What are summer fruits?
Think vibrant colours and you are already halfway there! Succulent strawberries, luscious litchis, cheeky cherries, plump peaches, magnificent mangoes, pudgy plums, marvellous melons, awesome apricots, wonderful watermelons are just some of your delicious choices! You can even find out which fruits are in season by visiting your local Food Lover’s Market, just look for the fruits on special. Or you could check out our article; Eating Seasonally – What’s in Season.
Why should I eat seasonally?
There are many reasons why we should eat seasonally. Apart from the fact that summer fruits are so tasty and sweet that it almost seems immoral to not enjoy then, you are helping local farmers and the environment. By eating super fresh summer fruits that haven’t been put in cold storage or imported you reduce carbon emissions and energy consumption. Seasonal fruits also give us the nutrients we need for that specific time of year – notice how fruits full of water are abundant in summer? But best of all is the cost! Seasonal fruits are normally cheaper than fruits not in season.
