4 Superfood Powers of Apples!

The supermarkets are full of apples at their best, as they would have just been harvested. Apples are full of nutrition – there is a reason the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. Let’s take a look at the super food powers of these super inexpensive fruits.

Superfood Power 1: Weight loss
Apples are free from fat, cholesterol and salt. The have a low calorie content and are high in dietary fibre. Apples help you to feel fuller for longer, so they can assist with you consuming less calories overall.

Superfood Power 2: Brain food
Apples contain a powerful antioxidant that protects your brain cells. Most of this antioxidant is found in the skin, so be sure to crunch the entire apple. There have been studies that show apples are effective in reducing memory loss.

Superfood power 3: Good for the heart
Not only do the fibre and vitamin C in apples protect the heart, the antioxidant found in apples works to lower cholesterol. A study where participants ate an apple each day, showed a decrease in bad cholesterol.

Superfood Power 4: Maintaining healthy skin and bones
Apples are a great source of vitamin B and vitamin C. Both of these promote skin health. Granny Smith and Red Delicious also contain collagen and elastin.

Apples are a tasty fresh and nutrient-rich snack to enjoy at any time. This month (May 2018), we have partnered up with Tru-Cape Fruit, and will be donating R0.79 to FoodForwardSA with each 1.5kg bag of apples purchased.
